I am a mathematics teacher in Chesapeake, Virginia. My career didn't start out that way, though. I went to college and got a degree in Secondary Mathematics, but I worked in the construction industry for many years. Throughout that time, I possessed a passion for math deep down inside and regularly tutored struggling students. I had an acquaintance who encouraged me to go into teaching full-time. So, back to school I went to earn a master's degree in Secondary Education from the University of Alabama. When I began teaching, I had an experience with an ESL student who became very emotional because she couldn't grasp the concept of the material. This interaction inspired me to attempt to understand different styles of learning. I also then went for my doctorate in Multicultural Education at Capella University. Now, it is my personal goal to apply mathematical practices to students' unique lives in a way that helps them gain knowledge.Algebra and Geometry are my favorite branches of math. I like to teach these the most because they're so multi-faceted that they can truly be relevant to anyone. It rewards me to end the notion of impossibility that so many students feel and to watch their faces light up whenever they realize that they are capable of knowing these things.
